Leave it out: big website no-nos in China
We think of public expression as free in Australia. When you look around at advertising and media, it’s full of sex, scandal and seduction, and this is exaggeratedly so on the internet. In China, however, this is not the case. While you probably know of the Great Wall, you may not of heard of the Great Firewall, the Ministry of Public Security’s censorship and surveillance program.
There’s an interesting article on this subject at PolicyMic by Charles Lorum, who lists the top 10 key words that are censored in China, particularly on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Facebook.
If any of these words or salacious images appear on your website, it could get banned in China, meaning that it simply becomes unviewable. This would mean an end to your reach into that market. That is not what you want.
Given that your goal is to penetrate the Chinese market, China Blueprint has come up with a three-point checklist that we believe is crucial to a successful business strategy. So before you invest in Chinese search engine optimisation or marketing tailored for the Chinese market, make sure you tick these boxes.

Go to the story on PolicyMic and search the web for similar articles to make sure that your social media content contains no words that will offend Chinese censors. Also remove any sexually provocative images. You want to get ahead, not behind a firewall.
click 2. Go native
Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are blocked by censors so swap them for Chinese versions so they are viewable. You’ll need help with this, so raise the question with your service provider or contact China Blueprint.
3. Local host
While your current host may serve your current needs well, ask if their reach into China can equal this. A hosting company that has a high quality service and speedy response time in China is essential. Remember, it is estimated that there are more than 700 million internet users in China this year; slow service will turn them off like a light.
